Staying Productive: Tips from Our Los Angeles Web Marketing Team

Being productive isn’t just about working, it’s about providing quality work. Anyone can say “I’m being productive” and all they’re doing is doing a lot of substandard work. By that same token, many spend far too long researching productivity advice and far less time getting stuff done. I’m part of a Los Angeles web marketing team.  Each of us has different routines, and different ways that we’re productive in providing quality work for our clients.

These are some of the tactics that work for us. These may work for you. Or, if they don’t, they very well may make you think of something that does. The most effective productivity tip is the one that’s going to be effective for you.

Modified Pomodoro Technique (With Appetizers)

Our Founder and CEO Danny Star will gather the team (no matter where we might be physically) to work together in brief, intense periods all for one client, task, etc. This is a version of the popular “Pomodoro” technique.

The idea here is that you work very hard for a period of time, take a short rest, and then work very hard. This technique has become very popular in the last few years. It can be a very effective tool. However, like all tools, it’s best when configured to your specific needs.

For example, our team works for a stretch of an hour to ninety minutes. Traditional Pomodoro is a bit shorter than that, usually coming in at 20 to 30 minutes. Find a timespan that works for you (or modify the timespan as necessary) and you can see your productivity increase.

Now, the key to this is: actually sticking to the numbers. If you take too long of a break, for example, it can be too challenging to get back to doing good work.

Additionally, we work as a team, all video conferencing at the same time. That way, everyone is accountable and can answer questions in real-time. Doing this from time to time can really provide productivity with a rocket boost.

The More Complex the Task, the Fewer Distractions

How do you work best? When I’m creating content for our Los Angeles marketing agency, I find that I often have music or podcasts on in the background. But, if I have a really complex task, like if I’m doing heavy research on something, I don’t. I’m not alone in this. Studies have shown that the more complex a task is, the more disruptive even a small distraction can be.

So, if you’re someone who often has the radio or a TV on, consider muting it or turning it off when you have something challenging to do. This can help in so many ways. Not the least of which is that it can help you to get something tough done in less time.

One Task At a Time (if You Can)

If you’ve come to this after reading other blogs about productivity, you may have noticed some common themes. So many that I’ve come across say some version of: “only tackle one task at a time.” That’s great advice if you have a job and/or life that allows you to do so. Here at Website Depot, we have a lot of work to do for a lot of clients. As such, I’m often working on several tasks at once.

So, I focus on one task at a time when I’m able. But, when something arises out of nowhere that requires my attention, I turn to that. What I advocate for is a kind of flexibility. Yes, focus on one task at a time. Absolutely, get it done well and with alacrity. Yet, be ready to jump to something else if you must.

Either Tackle the Big Things First, Or Get Something Small Out of the Way

Many productivity experts will tell you to focus on the biggest, most challenging tasks first in the workday. Others will say to take care of a bunch of smaller, more manageable tasks. Then, when you have those mastered, move on to your more challenging tasks. I go either way on this. In fact, I take it day by day here.

If there’s something very challenging that I have to do, maybe I will do it first thing in the morning. Or, depending on the task/how I’m feeling, I may get some small stuff out of the way before tackling “The Big Thing of the Day.” Like so much with productivity, you don’t have to just follow one way all of the time. Find what works for you, and stick to it… until it doesn’t work.
