We’re a full-service digital marketing company, yes, but we’re also more than that.

If your company is in a digital emergency, we can help there, too.

Just about every single business in any industry, to be successful, has to be online.

But, you may not have started your small business to be online.

To use a (potentially clumsy) analogy: you may have wanted to open an apparel store. That doesn’t mean that you wanted to plan and construct a building, by yourself, for that apparel store to be in.

The same goes with being online.

Should (knock on wood) your building catch on fire, you’d call the local fire department.

If something goes wrong with your website or some other online problem, our clients know that they can call us for web services and more.

The Type of Emergency We Can Help With

Here’s a recent article that covers the sort of problem that Website Depot can fix for clients.

“Researchers discovered a vulnerability in WP Bakery page builder that allows an attacker to inject malicious JavaScript into pages and posts. The vulnerability allows an attacker to inject code into pages and posts that then attacks site visitor browsers.”

Now, you may not know all about “WP Bakery” and “JavaScript.”

However, I’m willing to bet you know it’s not good when you see words like “vulnerability,” “attacker, “inject,” “malicious,” and “attacks site visitors.”

Those are signs of a true emergency.

Part of what makes these “attackers” so dangerous is that, in their own way, they’re professionals.

It’s not like these attackers are doing this as a hobby or something. They’re here to hurt your business.

We use the analogy often about how “your website is your storefront, office, and more.”

However, if you “go it alone,” so to speak, you are your storefront’s and office’s security system.

With a company like us by your side, we can help to make things right after something like this occurs.

Professional Work

I was discussing this article (over Slack) with my co-worker Ezekiel Hernandez.

He said something that really stuck with me about this WordPress issue:

“We can fix this hack and make sure that businesses have a safer version of WordPress. These are the kinds of mistakes that people make when they’re trying to cut corners and save time.”

That made so much sense to me.

A business owner who’s getting started with WordPress or something like that wants to do a good job, yes, but they also want to get things done.

They want to complete this task so that they can move on with the rest of their day.

So, it stands to reason that they might take an action or two that could potentially be exploited by those who would do them harm.

It’s one more thing that we can keep from happening.

Safety is by no means all of what we do, but it’s an important part of what we do. It helps to make the rest of it possible.

To see how we can help you (even before there’s an emergency) you can reach out to us at (888) 477-9540.

Designing something to be “viral” is a losing game, but success can come from hard work.

“So,” the prospective client says coyly, “what can you do to make my marketing go viral?”

I wish I could tell you that’s happened once.

Alas, it’s maybe happened more than you think.

There’s nothing wrong with the question, of course.

People want their marketing to reach as many people as possible. That’s just the nature of business.

But, there’s no way to “force” something to go viral. It can’t be bought. Nor can it be convinced, reason with, and so forth.

That said, if you work hard, then you can be successful. Moreover, you’ll have something that can be sustained.

An Analogy

I’m not really a car guy.

I drive a Jeep. It’s more than good enough for me.

But, I know a little bit about cars.

Before I came to Website Depot, there was an analogy on the homepage about how “having company without a website is like having a car without an engine.”

That always stuck with me.

To continue the vehicular analogies, think of your business like a car.

Everyone wants to “go viral.” They want success quickly. They want to be able to reach so many people.

That’s like a blast of turbo.

Your car will go really, really fast. But, it doesn’t last for very long. What do you do after that? Keep hitting the turbo? You don’t have to know much about cars to know that’s a bad idea.

On the other hand, you’ve got your engine.

Maybe it doesn’t go as fast as the turbo.

But, it won’t stall out on you. There’s little chance that it will crash. You’ll be able to keep accelerating. By that same token, you’ll be able to pull back the speed when you want.

Hopefully, you’ve gotten the analogy by this point (and also, we’ve exhausted just about all I know about cars).

A Plan for Today, Tomorrow, and Beyond

Relying on or working for “virality” isn’t going to help your business.

The best thing you can do is to create good content and marketing for your company.

That way, you’ll always be able to connect to prospective customers. You’ll be able to build a base over time. Sure, it might not happen all at once. But, it’s something you can rely on, day in, day out, quarter in, quarter out.

How many companies or people that have gone viral have you never heard about afterwards?

Exactly.

“Slow and steady wins the race” is not quite as exciting as “like and subscribe break the internet!!!!!!!!”

But, through doing so, you’ll be able to keep your business growing.

For help with this, web services, online marketing, or anything else, give us a call at (888) 477-9540.

It’s almost impossible to overstate how important pictures are to your marketing.

Describing something is important. But, describing it in the caption of a picture is almost always better.

You don’t need me to tell you how critical pictures are to your marketing.

However, there are some kinds of pictures that, as our full-service digital marketing and responsive web design services company has found, can help you to connect to even more potential clients and customers.

Best When Done From the Outside

Customer/user pictures can be invaluable.

If they’ve sent them in to you or allowed you to use them, do so.

We all know the cliche “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This is more like: “a picture is worth a thousand Yelp reviews.”

Sure, potential customers want to read great reviews about how great your company is. That said, those can be boosted tremendously by customer pictures.

You don’t have to take our word for this, either.

A study found that “nearly two-thirds (62%) of consumers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, and the US said they were more likely to buy a product if they were able to view customer photos and videos.”

So, it stands to reason that you want to collect videos and pictures from your customers.

If you don’t have many, consider running a promotion.

Have a giveaway or discount someone’s only eligible for if they send you pictures or videos.

Another way that customer photos and videos can be a boon for your company: complaints.

If someone is unhappy with your product or service and includes a photo, you can use that to figure out what went wrong (if anything did) and how best to address it.

Those are the kinds of challenges that, with a bit of quick thinking, can end up being opportunities to better establish your company’s authority and expertise.

If You Take Your Own Pictures

First off, take it seriously.

Take good pictures.

Light your products well.

“Our products sell themselves” is one thing. “Our products can sell themselves through shoddy, unprofessional, and hastily taken photos” is another.

There is one place for “hastily taken photos” in your marketing, of course: in the course of a day.

If you’re looking for what to take pictures of, “your team/product hard at work” is almost always a good idea.

That’s a place where a potential customer could understand that the pictures were less than professionally taken, as the product/your staff were hard at work at the time.

Another thing to consider if you’re unsure what to take pictures of: consider what your potential customers/clients want.

For example, to return to that study, “roughly a quarter (24%) of respondents said the extra information may highlight something that wasn’t obvious.”

I ask our clients this all the time on my podcast: “what’s something the layperson may not know about who you are/what you do?”

That’s the kind of thing that shows off what’s special about your company, what separates you/your products/services from the rest.

For help with pictures and anything else related to marketing, you can call our full-service digital marketing and responsive web design services at (888) 477-9540.

You know original content is important for your business.

What many folks stumble on is how “original” the content should be.

Obviously, everyone knows not to run afoul of plagiarism, that kind of thing.

That said, “not copying something word for word” is setting standards for yourself far too low.

Yes, you want to create original content to improve your online ranking, sure.

However, equally as big a benefit to online content (if not bigger) is that you can provide extra value to your customers.

Not every blog, social media post, or video has to be life-changing for any and all who see it. But, if you can provide a bit of real value, something that can actually help someone, in everything that you do, your original content can really help your business.

Beyond that, there are some other tips to keep in mind our full-service digital marketing and CMS web design business can share.

One Question to Ask Before You Publish Your Content

“Is this really what I want to say?”

That may seem like an odd or even small question to ask.

But, before you release your content into the wild, so to speak, ask: “Is this absolutely how I want my company to be seen?”

This doesn’t, of course, mean that you have to spend hours and hours on every tweet.

Reading it out loud, having it looked over by a colleague, supervisor, co-worker, or someone similar is never, ever a bad idea.

But, before you post something, ask yourself that question.

Be real honest about it, too.

More often than not, I find that there’s something I could change. Whether it’s a tweak to make it more informative, more informal, more formal, or something similar, I usually find there’s some change I could make that makes everything better.

That, in a very real way, is “the human touch.”

You might even want to consider taking a break before doing so, too. Work on what you’re going to post, then go to lunch or even work on something else. That way, you can come back to it with a “clean head,” so to speak.

These little tweaks are what can take a company’s content from “good” to “outstanding.”

Duplicating “the Right Way”

“This is a great piece of content! Let’s duplicate it over multiple sites.”

Maybe you’ve thought that. Perhaps someone has suggested it.

Google, however, is cracking down on it.

As this article states, “Google uses a predictive method to detect duplicate content based on URL patterns, which could lead to pages being incorrectly identified as duplicates. In order to prevent unnecessary crawling and indexing, Google tries to predict when pages may contain similar or duplicate content based on their URLs.”

Now, the article goes on to say that “it’s worth noting there’s no penalty or negative ranking signal associated with duplicate content. At most, Google will not index duplicate content, but it won’t reflect negatively on the site overall.”

That said, you don’t want to create something only to find that Google has refused to index it.

So, as the article also states, Google “suggests looking for situations where there are real cases of duplicate content and to limit that as much as possible.”

“But, I have some content I really like and want to get it out there multiple ways,” you might think, “wouldn’t that run afoul of this Google rule?”

Not really.

You know what can be “duplicated?”

Concepts. Themes.

For example, say that you run a restaurant. Writing a blog about a particular recipe can be a great idea. Duplicating that blog in a bunch of different URLs probably isn’t.

What is a good idea: making a video about that recipe.

Putting out a podcast about how you’ve made it, the history of it, that kind of thing.

That’s not “duplicating” in the way that Google means it. Rather, it’s about getting the most out of what you do best.

For more in that vein, you can reach our full-service digital marketing and CMS web design company at (888) 477-9540.

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away.

As you’re probably sick of hearing (and I’m rather tired of writing) “this holiday isn’t like any other.” There’s never been a Valentine’s Day in our lifetimes that’s occurred during a global pandemic.

Many of the most romantic dinners, for example, will be held at home, outside, or somewhere else that’s safe from the virus. Even those that do opt for a “big” Valentine’s Day will find it altered indeed.

That said, there’s plenty our full-service digital marketing agency has come across that could help your industry can take from Valentine’s Day marketing. This is true for this February as well as beyond.

Loyalty to Loved Ones; Not to Stores

I rarely come across a quote in reading daily marketing articles that’s genuinely heartbreaking. However, today, I read this quote from a florist in Florida: “At a time when someone is sending you an ‘I love you’ card, someone is sending an ‘I loved you’ card.”

Florists, to keep up with the Valentine’s Day business, “are turning away funeral business this month.”

The takeaway from this for your business is that it’s not a bad time to reach out to folks even if yours isn’t a business that has anything to do with Valentine’s Day.

There’s nothing wrong with sending a discount, a coupon, something to customers you haven’t reached out to in some time. It’s the business equivalent of sending someone a “thinking of you” gift.

Beyond that, it’s important to remember that folks are less loyal to brands and stores than ever. With the advent of the true digital shopping age, people have gone online more and more to find alternatives.

Indeed, studies have shown that “40% of consumers have tried out new brands or shops as a result of the pandemic.”

While that presents concerns, it also presents opportunities. You can reach more potential customers than you might have otherwise.

More Valentine’s Day, Online and Off

If you read these blogs last Autumn and Winter, then you may remember how there were all kinds of studies saying “extend your holiday deals.”

The idea was, with the pandemic and everything up in the air, people were going to engage in holiday shopping for a longer period.

So, “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” became “Cyber Week,” that kind of thing.

The same could hold true for Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year, but that doesn’t mean people will stop buying chocolates, flowers, or anything else the following Monday.

You could do well by drawing the holiday season out, giving more customers more opportunities to save.

For more help with growing your company online, our full-service digital marketing agency is always here at (888) 477-9540.

Have you noticed that your Google organic rankings have begun to drop?

Does it seem like your facility isn’t showing up on Google Maps?

In these blogs, I’ll often mention something “you can do today as well as tomorrow.”

This isn’t one of those times.

This is something you should do right now.

Here at Website Depot, part of the Google My Business partners program, this comes down from Danny Star himself. So, you know it’s something that’s important for your business.

Beyond just helping your business immediately in regards to Google, it can show how you should operate in the future, too.

Log In to Your Google My Business Now

If your Google organic rankings have dropped, or you aren’t showing up on Google Maps, it might simply be a question of updating your GMB.

So, just to double check, log in to your Google My Business.

Click the button that says “Get Started.”

Then, confirm that your business is open.

Make sure that you click “yes” for everything applicable: that you’re operating on-site, that you’re taking appointments, and so forth.

While you’re at it, check the link to your website, as well as all of the times that you’re open for business.

Furthermore, Google is going to ask you about all of your COVID-19 procedures and policies.

Check all that apply: if customers/clients are required to wear masks, staff, temperature checks, all of it.

Then, (and here’s a critical step that’s all too easy to forget) click “save.”

That way, Google knows.

Wait a moment, then search for your business.

If it worked out, you should have checkmarks next to your site, your services, appointments available, and so forth.

This can help your ranking dramatically.

Further Thoughts

You might ask: “Why would Google make me go through all this?”

Well, as I’ve mentioned before, Google always wants to display the best businesses. One part involved with that: being up to date.

Businesses that “let things slide,” so to speak, online, will typically do so in their work as well. (That’s not to say that yours has, of course, just coming from Google’s perspective.)

So, by updating all of this, you’re letting Google know: “Hey, we’re here, we’re doing our jobs, and we’re taking the virus seriously.”

The last is important, particularly if you haven’t done this in a while.

While this blog is about updating all of this in regards to Google, remember, this is something you should probably do for your business just in general.

After all, posting on social media regularly, churning out content, and so forth, doesn’t just give you the chance to connect to potential customers, be seen as an authority, and so forth. It also shows them that you’re still working, viable, and ready to help.

Online advertising is perhaps the most powerful form of advertising ever designed.

It’s also accessible to every business owner.

This wasn’t the case for previous generations. Years ago, someone could pay to put their ad on the radio, but they couldn’t just broadcast it themselves.

Now, with Google Ads and similar forms of advertising, you can be in complete control.

We understand small business owners that want to handle their own online ads. After all, it’s your business. You started it, you grew it to where it is, and it makes sense to want to be in control.

But, that could cause you to, at best, not get all that you can out of your Google Ads. Worse, it can cause you to lose your money and not get anything positive at all. That’s the kind of thing our Google Ads management company keeps from happening.

I thought about that today when I read this sobering report.

Click Fraud is Rampant Online

In simple terms, “click fraud” is a way to lose money with online advertising without growing your customer base. It’s more or less the last thing you as a small business owner want to happen.

Unfortunately, it happens all of the time.

These findings from just last year show that “36% of display ad clicks are fraudulent or invalid.”

So, on average, more than one-third of ad clicks on display ads aren’t anything, they’re just wasted money and resources.

What’s perhaps more frightening than this is how “only 13% of accounts monitored had little to no fraudulent or invalid activity.”

That means more than one in ten of every company’s online ad clicks aren’t real. That’s true across industries, platforms, etc.

That’s an incredible amount of wasted money.

In fact, as the study goes on to show, the average small business loses just under $15,000 annually due to this.

That number goes way, way up for bigger businesses.

Think about your business: odds are you don’t have $15 to just lose.

The question then becomes “how can you keep this from happening?”

Of course, the day before Thanksgiving, I’m going to talk about food.

Specifically, snacking.

Mondelez International, Inc. is one of the world’s largest snack companies.

You may not have heard that name. But, you have heard of Ritz, Oreo, Chips Ahoy! (exclamation point proper punctuation), Triscuit, Sour Patch Kids, Club Social, Toblerone, Cadbury, and so, so many other snacks that you’ve no doubt had.

Thus, when they say something about snacking, one tends to listen.

They did a study called the “State of Snacking.”

The study found that “9 in 10 of global adults are snacking more or the same during the pandemic than before.”

You probably didn’t need a study from a multinational corporation to tell you that.

However, they found quite a bit of other information, too.

The findings can help you to better connect to your customers during this time, no matter what industry you’re in.

Comfort in Snacking (and Everything Else)

As the study found, “Comfort is the top driver of snacking this year.”

It went on to say that “consumers see snacking as an important source of comfort, connection, and community, especially during the past year.”

So, if you’re looking at which products or services to emphasize during this holiday season or even beyond, you can’t go wrong focusing on comfort.

People want to be comforted. They want to be connected, to feel better even if just for a moment.

Just about every company in any industry can offer some bit of that.

Whether it’s focusing on how comfortable your furniture is, or how happy Dad/someone in your life will be when you buy them that new table saw, or anything else, putting an emphasis on comfort and happiness can guide you well this holiday season.

As the study went on to say, “snacking also offers bite-sized moments of satisfaction and peace, with a majority of respondents noting it has helped distract them from a trying year.”

Health, Hope, and the Future

While more people have turned to snacking than before, they also understand that snacking can go wrong. You can do too much snacking.

To wit, the study found “as snacking increases, so too does the focus on healthy products and ingredients.”

Indeed, more than half of the people who responded to this study (folks from literally all over the world) found that they wanted snacks for “nourishment,” as well as focusing on what the snacks can provide them and even wanting smaller portions (so they won’t eat as much).

You can take from this that, if you’re offering some product for consumption, that you want healthier options.

But, at the risk of straining an analogy too far, I would also argue this shows that people care about the environment and being “green” too.

Eating healthier or even attempting to do so is done with an eye towards the future. Specifically, a better future. Snack companies (and really food companies of all kinds) have been able to bring in more customers than ever by offering some healthy (or even just healthier) options.

But, if your company doesn’t sell or market food, you can achieve a similar effect by showing how you’re environmentally conscious, too.

Attention-grabbing.

Instantly-engaging.

Are you looking for ways to get your potential audience’s attention and never let it go?

Those are a couple of methods right there.

Short, evocative phrases.

Alternatively, you could ask questions that your potential customer may be asking. Ideally, the answer to the question is: your company, products, or services.

Those are methods for the beginning of a piece of content.

You can use them in blogs, yes, but you can also use them in videos, vlogs, and more.

It’s one thing to get someone’s attention. It’s something else entirely to keep it.

This is one great tip I came across today while doing my daily reading for our content marketing agency services.

A Lesson from the COVID-19 Vaccine

Like so many of you, I’ve been thinking quite a bit about the COVID-19 vaccine. Imagining all the things I’ll do and places I’ll go once I have it, and so forth.

This article about marketing the vaccine really spoke to me.

Specifically, there’s a part where a marketing expert addresses the hesitancy some may have to getting vaccinated.

Their advice is: “People are more compelled by stories than they are by statistics. If your patient says to you, ‘hey, the lady down the street from me said her niece had a bad reaction. I’m the same age as her niece. I’m really worried about this.” It’s important not to say, “Well, let me show you a chart that will explain exactly how rare this is.” (Instead) it’s more important to say, “I have a patient exactly your age who was in here last week, and they were one of the first people to get the vaccine, and they did great.”

Statistics aren’t going to be the answer there. Someone who comes in saying “hey, I’ve heard of someone who says that this didn’t work out for them” isn’t going to be swayed by numbers on a chart.

There’s an important lesson here.

How This Applies to Your Business

When marketing your business to your customers, always keep that in mind.

Real people talking honestly is always going to be an asset.

It doesn’t have to be your only asset. Rather, it should be utilized effectively.

Testimonials from customers and clients can be powerful. That’s true whether they’re in writing on your social media pages or filmed videos.

You may even want to have contests or promotions where the winners will get to be filmed.

This isn’t to say that you never want to use statistics or the like in your marketing. But, just never lose sight of the human element. For example, our full-service digital and content marketing agency services have plenty of clients who have been in business for a very long time. So, in some of their marketing, we’ll show statistics of their growth in addition to pictures from their beginning, testimonials from long-time customers/clients, and so forth.

Using this in your marketing can make everything that much more potent.

“AI is the way of the future!”

“Soon, just about everything in marketing will be done manually!”

We’ve read those quotes, too.

They tend to show up in so many “what to expect in the new year” columns. It felt like there were more of them than ever before this year. That makes sense, as the pandemic forced so many of us to work remotely, out of the office, and far from each other.

Technology is always advancing. What we’re able to utilize at our full-service digital online marketing company, for example, often consists of what would have been thought of as science fiction just a few years ago.

That said, the “AI revolution” isn’t a straight path. It has many curves, stops and starts. By finding a way to merge technological advancements with good, old-fashioned manual work, you’ll be able to find what’s best for your business.

Where Technology Is Heading

I found this article fascinating.

For one, “Autonomous A/B Testing” and “Natural Language Processing” certainly seem like they could help any business’s marketing.

In short, “NLP” would be able to make it so that “AI can successfully imitate human speech, form naturally flowing sentences, and give human-to-machine interactions a personal touch.”

Also from the article, “autonomous (A/B) testing is the ability to create test cases and executive them without human intervention.” In the context of the article, that would use “algorithms, data, and predictive models to analyze web pages and offer a complete breakdown of all well-performing elements. This (would enable) marketers to create a site that combines all the best-performing features and optimizes conversion rates.”

That all sounds fantastic.

One thing I did note, though: if you read the article, there’s no mention of what this technology is. No links to who’s doing it, explanations of where this is on the horizon, etc.

As I read on, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it would be impossible for me (or anyone here at Website Depot) to sign off on something that never had a human involved.

As someone who writes and proofreads so much of the content here, I wouldn’t feel comfortable allowing something to go through that had been created entirely by the best “NLP” without reading it over. I imagine I’m not alone in that.

What I’m saying is that these tech advancements, like so many others, really do sound great. That said, they’re not going to be at the point where marketers (or any business owner) can trust them entirely, not yet. I’m certainly open to being convinced (I’ve seen plenty of tech advancements just in the last year alone) but for now and the foreseeable future, Website Depot is going to rely on the human touch at the beginning as well as at the end of the process.

Where It Can Help Today

Of course, don’t take the above paragraph to mean I’m “anti-technology.” If anything, I’m the opposite. I’m all for trying as much new tech as possible to see how it can work.

That’s going to be critically important, of course, as this article states.

You don’t need to have a subscription to the service to get the gist of it. The headline says it all: “Marketing Execs Won’t Return to Travel Until at Least June.”

So, it’s going to be just as important as ever to continue to expand what you can do online. All of those remote work routines and habits you’ve built, they’re going to continue to be important. Moreover, I personally believe that, even when the world does open up and we’re all vaccinated, much of what we’ve found during the “digital age” is going to stick with us.

By balancing new technology with what you’re already good at, you can get the most from both the tech and your staff.
